"CASLAVSKA TOKYO 1964" is a Czech-Japanese production telling the story of one of the most famous Czech sportswomen of all time, the artistic gymnast Věra Čáslavská. Her sporting fame first touched the stars at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where she won three individual gold medals and silver in the team competition. She thus became one of the main heroines of the Olympic Games, which the Japanese remember even today as their national triumph, thanks to which they managed to transform the way their country was viewed after all the events of the Second World War. After all, sport and the Olympic Games in particular have always been intertwined with politics. Just think of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, or the more recent examples of the Beijing and Sochi Olympics. Věra Čáslavská also knew about the intertwining of sport and politics, and she made a definitive mark in the memory of the global public at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico not only with her fabulous sporting performances, when she won a total of six medals (four of them gold), but also with her famous gesture of silent resistance to the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, which spread worldwide. And in general, the entire life story of Čáslavská, with all her stellar moments and hard falls seems to mirror the political history of our country.
